It seems natural to assume that paying Google for ad placement might impact rank – right?
Well the answer we have given for years, and one that Google stands behind, is “no”. Having an active Google Adwords account has no impact on where your website appears in organic search results.
Or does it???
Regulators in Europe are not so sure.
The European Union Commission that is investigating Google for possible anti-trust violations will start a separate probe before the end of 2015 to examine how paid-for links and advertisements affect search rankings. The probe, which is separate from an antitrust lawsuit the EU filed weeks ago accusing Google of improperly tampering with search results, is part of the EU’s proposal for an Europe-wide trade agreement to make European companies more competitive with Silicon Valley.
This one is a very big deal for internet marketers…
