So you have a website that serves as a platform for sales. How’s it performing?
If you are like so many businesses – you are bedeviled by high shopping cart abandonment rates
– lost sales.
So what’s a person to do to make things better?
Here are a few facts to chew on:
- 57% of site visitors will abandon a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load.
- 80% of the customers that abandon will NEVER come back.
- 64.7% of all visitors will abandon ecommerce sites at checkout.
- Men have a higher rate of shopping cart abandonment than women.
Is it possible to reduce these numbers?
Here are some tips:
a) Offer great visuals of all items you are selling. Visuals are the top influencer in
ecommerce. Also use videos to showcase your products whenever possible.
b) Consider posting online reviews of your business and your products. Eighty-five percent
of visitors in several studies claimed these influenced purchase decisions.
c) Shorten the checkout process. A great site will have no more than 5 steps – and even
that is too many.
d) Don’t force customers to sign up for newsletters. As many as half will have no interest
and will abandon a site they feel will use personal data for that reason.
e) Using discount codes can give a very meaningful lift to ecommerce sales. Over half of
respondents in three surveys admitted they would not have made a purchase without
them. Coupons also seem to increase customer satisfaction.
f) 59% of customers say they consider shipping costs when making a purchase decision.
Keep shipping options simple and as inexpensive as possible. 44% will abandon your
cart when they consider shipping charges “too high”.
g) Giving customers a sense of payment security is a huge issue now. Many visitors to your
site will feel safer seeing trustworthy credit card logos as well as security certificates
h) Follow the KISS principle when building your transactions pages – always Keep It Simple
Finally – make sure your customer service is up to the job. No business can survive if it fails to
serve at a high level.
